Aiming to further enhance the international reputation of Taiwan's MICE industry and also to assist the Kaohsiung City Government in bidding for the 2020 International Congress and Convention Association's (ICCA) Congress, this year’s Taiwan delegation, with the full support of the Bureau of Foreign Trade of Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs, broke a record with 30 members in attendance. The 2016 ICCA Congress was held from November 13 to 16 in Kuching, Malaysia.
With assistance from the MEET TAIWAN project office, Taiwan not only sponsored the ICCA Congress badge and congress app, for the first time the lunch was also sponsored with the objective to raise the popularity of Taiwan and Kaohsiung as MICE destinations. Taiwan delegates innovatively expressed Taiwanese hospitality by having members line up at the entrance of the luncheon and giving high fives to every participant, delivering the warmth of Taiwanese people through the contact of palms.
Kaohsiung has been very actively devoted to attracting international conferences and meetings ever since the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center opened in 2014. Aside from placing advertisements on professional conference media worldwide and attending IMEX for promotion, the city government further demonstrated its aggressiveness in developing MICE business by inviting ICCA's Board of Directors to Kaohsiung for an ICCA core summit in 2015. Kaohsiung, with full support from both the national government and MICE industry of Taiwan, is bidding for the 2020 ICCA Congress. The seven other competing destinations include Macao, Yokohama, Helsinki, Rotterdam, Athens, Saint Petersburg, and Cartagena (Columbia). The final result will be announced at IMEX Frankfurt 2017 next May.
