Taipei will be hosting the 2017 Summer Universiade (the world's 2nd largest sporting event besides the Olympic Games), using venues in Taipei and four adjacent cities from August 19 to 30. A total of 12,000 athletes from 150 countries will be coming to Taipei for heated competitions.
The Universiade consists of 22 sports, including track and field, basketball, diving, and fencing. Most events will take place in Taipei and the opening and closing ceremonies will be staged at the Taipei Stadium. The Taipei city government, as organizer, is busy overhauling 60 venues in Northern Taiwan, making them smarter and improving their environments and facilities to ensure they will be up to international standards.
The 2017 Universiade slogan is "For You • For Youth", while the powerful and courageous Formosan Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus formosanus) has been chosen as mascot for the event, one that symbolizes the challenges and pursuits for excellence of athletes. The logo design forms the shape of the letter U (which stands for Universiade, United, and University). It represents the inspirational vigor of the young generation, bringing limitless hope as well as positive faith.
The capacity of Taiwan’s smart cities will also be on full display as all venues will have high-quality facilities where information can be accessed via apps, and e-management services will also be available. The organizer has also co-developed a smart watch with Mediatek, Acer, and the EasyCard Corporation that will serve as a fitness tracker, remote control, and communication/payment device. The equivalent of 70 Euros will be stored in advance for all athletes to freely experience Taiwan's convenient services.
The Universiade has top-tier sponsors both from home and abroad, such as EVA Air, China Airlines, and Uni-President, besides, more than 5,000 firms support the event and provide services.
