In response to worldwide trends in trade facilitation and the simplification of trading procedures, Chinese Taipei launched trade facilitation projects beginning in 2001.
The ECO project is an APEC ECSG Pathfinder Project. And it also falls under our framework of the “Challenge 2008 National Development Plan”. For that reason, we are dedicated to promoting cross border ECO exchange projects with Asian countries. Two years ago, in an APEC ECSG meeting, Korea showed a great interest in cooperating with us. Both sides reached an agreement to implement a cross border ECO exchange project. Thereafter, we have actively discussed the details of cooperation with each other.
In April 2005, the first official bilateral meeting was held between Korea and Taiwan in Taipei. At that meeting, a project team was formed, the project scope was defined, and a project schedule was agreed. This year, we held the second official bilateral meeting in Seoul. Coupled with a thorough review and revision of relevant laws and regulations, this project is now going into the final stage. Once an MOU (Memorandum of understanding) is signed by each side, this project will enhance our overall trade competitive edge and improve business relationship between Korea and Taiwan.
