Taiwan Joins the APEC Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) System
On December 10, 2018, the National Development Council announced that Taiwan and Australia had joined the APEC Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) system, joining the United States, Mexico, Japan, Canada, South Korea, and Singapore.
The APEC CBPR system is a regional cross-border data transfer mechanism that raises standards for the protection of personal information, while ensuring that data flows freely among the participating members of APEC. A CBPR-certified company is permitted to transfer personal data collected by an APEC member economy across borders.
The approval of Taiwan to join the system will enable Taiwanese companies to vie for overseas business opportunities and improve the image of Taiwan’s cross-border privacy protection.
