MOEA and MOFA join hands to promote US-Taiwan Economic Dialogue

The Ministry of Economic Affairs recently cleared up the baseless accusation by the China Times news report, “Officials Say US-Taiwan FTA Impossible in the Upcoming Year” (Chinese article), that the government had been kept in the dark before the US announcement of the “Taiwan-US Economic and Commercial Dialogue”. The MOEA reiterates that the communication channels between the US and Taiwan are working well and the Ministry fully supports the establishment of a new high-level US-Taiwan economic dialogue.

The establishment of a dialogue between the US and Taiwan had already been announced by US Assistant Secretary of State David Stilwell at a virtual event on 31 August by the Heritage Foundation, in which Minister Wang delivered remarks and answered questions. The Ministry was well aware of Assistant Secretary Stilwell’s announcement prior to that virtual session. Minister Wang’s comments on Taiwan’s strategic role in the Indo-Pacific region to call upon support for a US-Taiwan BTA were made based on a enduring mutual understanding and the foundation of trust between both sides.
