During the virtual meeting of the General Council on 14 May, Roberto Azevêdo, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, announced that he would resign on 31 August 2020, one year before his term is scheduled to end. “We must give my successor sufficient time to plan, together with you, the path not only for MC12, but for how that conference fits into your plans for the future of the organization,” he told members.
In response to the resignation, David Walker, chair of WTO General Council, said he would soon start the selection process for the next Director-General, in the hope of confirming a successor before 1 September, 2020.
