In July 1970, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) pooled together various industrial groups to establish the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) - a body dedicated to promoting Taiwan’s trade. This July, TAITRA held a reception to celebrate the organization’s 50th anniversary. The event was attended by President Tsai Ing-Wen, Minister of Economic Affairs, Mei-Hua Wang, Director-General of the Bureau of BOFT, Chern-Chyi Chen, diplomatic envoys from over 50 countries, and representatives of economic institutions and over 200 important domestic business groups.

The BOFT’s past efforts expanding markets overseas with TAITRA and Taiwanese businesses form an important part of the history of the “Taiwan Economic Miracle”. The work assisting Taiwanese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) market across the world with just a suitcase has put the “Made in Taiwan” mark on all corners of the globe.

In her remarks, President Tsai commended TAITRA’s transformation from the nation’s “super sales body” to a “smart integrator” that showcases Taiwan’s soft and hard power through TAIWAN Expos in New Southbound Policy countries. Furthermore, she affirmed that TAITRA’s establishment of the Taiwan-USA Trade and Investment Networking Center last year (2019) amidst the world’s reorganization of supply chains and our ever closer bilateral ties will help business deployments in the US and leverage the respective advantages of both Taiwan and the US. President Tsai looked forward to TAITRA’s continued assistance with SMEs’ digital transformation to turn Taiwanese businesses into key drivers behind the world economy once again.

Minister Wang pointed out that TAITRA has contributed much towards SME development, having increased Taiwan’s trade more than 200-fold over the past 50 years to reach US$614 billion. TAITRA’s many world-class exhibitions bring Taiwan’s hidden champions onto the world stage. This May, the MOEA and TAITRA held various online events and worked with overseas offices showcasing Taiwan’s quality masks, protective clothing, and other anti-epidemic supplies.

TAITRA aligns with government policies and has promoted exports and led companies to the world market at different stages of our economic development over the past 50 years. The BOFT will continue to work with TAITRA and Taiwanese companies towards the next 50 years and jointly create a new prosperity for Taiwan's trade.
