According to World Bank statistics, Egypt was the largest economy in North Africa region. And became the second largest African economy in 2023. Meanwhile, Egypt was Taiwan’s 57th largest trading partner and 42nd largest export destination in 2023. Egypt is an important African trading partner for Taiwan.
Bilateral trade between Egypt and Taiwan totaled US$419 million in 2023, decreasing 34% over 2022. Of this figure, Egypt exports to Taiwan accounted for US$67 million, decrease by 55% compared to 2022, while Taiwan’s exports to Egypt accounted for US$352 million,decrease by 27% compared to 2022. The increasingly prosperous bilateral economic and trade exchanges between the two sides still has huge potential.
Investment
Egypt's economy relies mainly on agriculture, media, petroleum imports, natural gas, and tourism. Egypt is rich in nature resources. Egypt’s main exports include oil & mineral fuels, precious stones & metals, and plastics. The country’s main imports include oil & mineral fuels, machinery and parts, cereals, auto parts, plastic, steel, pharmaceutical and foodstuff. Textiles, food processing, tourism, chemicals are the main development industries in Egypt. Egypt is also a member of the UN, African Union (AU), League of Arab States (Arab League) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). Although Taiwanese company invest in Egypt still very few, but with its qualities, a sizable young workforce, and linkages to the middle east and rest of Africa, Egypt will certainly become an investment target with great potential for Taiwan in the future.
