Nick NI, Chief of Staff of the Bureau of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Economic Affairs delivering opening remarks at the Experience-sharing Session of the 2019 TAIWAN EXPO.

The Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) commissioned the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) in holding a business experience-sharing session at the 2019 TAIWAN EXPO held at the Taipei International Convention Center on December 23. A total of 7 well-seasoned speakers shared their experiences and marketing strategies from developing the New Southbound Policy markets. The event attracted over 800 businesses and a record number of registered attendees.

The BOFT has held the TAIWAN EXPO in 14 cities of 6 countries targeted under the New Southbound Policy in the past 3 years. From the joint efforts of relevant Ministries and departments as well as local governments, an accumulated 2300+ Taiwanese businesses have participated in exhibitions, seminars, information/experience-sharing sessions and business-matching events in efforts to market Taiwan’s soft and hard power. Almost 300,000 people participated in these events, which promoted exchanges on aspects including culture, education, talent and industry with NSP countries to help them get to know Taiwan.

Nick NI, Chief of staff at the BOFT mentioned in his remarks that with the uncertainties of the global political and economic outlook, the New Southbound Policy provides new direction and momentum to Taiwanese businesses. The TAIWAN EXPO is an ideal platform to bridge cooperation and exchanges between domestic and local industries of NSP countries. Zhi-Fang HUANG, Chairman of TAITRA compared the TAIWAN EXPO to a starship that leads the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises of Taiwan on a voyage to NSP countries.

Tsung-Rong YANG, Associate Professor of the National Taiwan Normal University, pointed out that Vietnam has a rapidly growing population, Indonesia has a huge Muslim group, and that the Philippines is an English-speaking country with a high level of education. These countries have gradually transformed from manufacturing to consumer markets. Meanwhile, Yoa-wen Chao, Chairman of accountancy firm, Ernst & Young, explained that businesses should be aware of Vietnam’s local labor laws to prevent labor disputes. The themes at the experience-sharing included localization tools to assist sales, advanced farm machinery in Indonesia, Taiwan cosmetics, health-related appliances in Thailand, and technology and video messaging in Southeast Asia. The event covered almost every field from healthcare, agricultural technology, cosmetics, sport and lifestyle to smart cities, which helped Taiwanese companies to gain a better and more comprehensive understanding of the NSP markets.

To lead Taiwanese businesses in continued promotion of our advantageous industries, the BOFT continues to work with TAITRA to hold the TAIWAN EXPO. In 2020, the Expo will head to Bandung, Indonesia; Mumbai, India; Ho Chi Mihn City, Vietnam; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Bangkok, Thailand to take root in the local markets and enhance Taiwan’s visibility. It is anticipated that more successful stories will be created by Taiwanese businesses in the future.
